Villa San Giovanni
This is the meeting point between Calabria and Sicily; it is from here, in fact, that the boats that daily make the tract of sea from Villa San Giovanni to Messina and vice versa, leave.
The patron saint’s festival is on the 24th of June, St. John.
The area of Cannitello, with its waterfront animated by bars, restaurant and pizzerias, hosts the sea procession of the Porto Salvo Virgin Mary every year on the second Saturday of August.
At 19km from Altafiumara Resort&Spa, the city of Reggio Calabria, in almost central position between the sea and the Aspromonte mountains, welcomes you with several tourist, cultural, artistic and gastronomic attractions left in legacy by the several inhabitants that settled in the territory during ancient times.
Not far from Altafiumara Resort&Spa, the village of Scilla rises. Suggestively beautiful, it overlooks the Strait of Messina. During clear days, it is possible to glimpse the Aeolian Islands at the horizon.
What to visit: the Ruffo of Scilla Castle, from uncertain origins, that hosts a lighthouse of the Navy; the area of Chianalea, that begins from the small port until the coast. With the houses of fishermen and the moored boats, it is perfect for the photography lovers; the Caverns of Tremusa, with fossilised shells on the walls, are reachable by car travelling through Melia di Scilla; the Church of St. Rocco, the patron, to which is linked the St. Rocco festival that takes place in the second half of August ending with the midnight Fireworks; the Church of Our Blessed Lady.

Not far from Scilla there is the small city of Bagnara Calabra, whose long shore is divided into two parts by the hill of Marturano. In addition to the sea, Bagnara is surrounded by mountains whose coves, through the time, formed some caverns. Bagnara is famous for the handmade production of torrone sweets and the fishing of swordfish.
What to visit: the Ruggiero Tower, dated to the XV century, rises up on the spur of Capo Rocchi; the Ducale Castle, built at the end of 1000 years, has been burned to the ground by the earthquake of 1783 and than rebuilt on the ruins of the previous castle; the Garibaldi fountain, built on the 24th of August 1864 when Garibaldi stopped in Bagnara; the Church of Carmine, one of the most ancient buildings of the city; the Church of Rosario.
Seminara is famous for the production of its ceramics in bright colours, but not only for this: the city has been the scene of three battles between the end of 1400 years and the begin of 1500 years.
What to visit: the ruins of Mezzatesta Castle, built between the XVI and the XVII centuries; the Guildhall; the Basiliano Obelisk, built in the X century; the Church of Virgin Mary of Poor people, rebuilt in 1930 after the destruction by the earthquake of 1908, that hosts several value statues; the Church of St. Marco Evangelist, that hosts works of art among which the statue of The Virgin Mary of Angels.
The city of Palmi rises on the sea just before the slopes of St. Elia Mount, from where enjoying a beautiful view. On the coast there are some bays, the most famous is the one of Tonnara, and some cliffs, among which the Cliff of the Olive tree. Palmi is a city rich in traditions: the one of the procession of the Varia, at a multi-year frequency, is the most popular, included between the “oral and intangible goods of humankind” from UNESCO.
What to visit: the Cathedral of St. Nicola; the Sacred place of Virgin Mary of Carmelo; the Civic tower; the Fountain of the Palm tree; the Saracen Tower; the Public garden “Giuseppe Mazzini”; St. Elia Mount, where a historical complex is built; the House of Culture-Museum “Leonida Repaci”.

Small Villages Itinerary
Motta San Giovanni
Motta San Giovanni rises on a hill overlooking the panorama of the Strait of Messina.
What to visit: the Castle of St. Niceto, dated back to the X century, that has been destroyed in 1459. Today only ruins remain; Capo d’Armi, a promontory with a breathtaking view; the Antiquarium Museum; the Church of Virgin Mary of Leandro, destination of pilgrims during the festival of the 15th of August; the Church of St. Catherine V.M., that from the 15th of August hosts the Effigy of Virgin Mary of Leandro; the Church of St. Michele Archangel.
At about 7km towards the interior of the city of Melito Porto Salvo, where Giuseppe Garibaldi disembarked, the small village of Pentedattilo rises at the bottom of a mountain with 5 peaks suggesting the idea of a hand, from where the name. The village, slowly abandoned during the years, little by little is finding a way to rise again with some artisan small shops. Every year, Pentedattilo is a stage of Paleariza, a festival that occurs in each village of the ancient Greek area. In addition, in September the cinema festival is here celebrated.

The village, whose name in ancient Greek is Vua, is considered the capital of the ancient Greek culture in Calabria. From ancient origins, it is set at the slopes of a hill. To visit the Norman Castle and the Ethnographic Museum. Among the culinary proposals, the “Lestopitta di Bova” has to be tasted.
Leave your car, take your bicycle and travel along the panoramic way of the Aspromonte Park. During your journey, you could observe the rocky formation that seem coming from the set of a science fiction film. Take a picture next to the Rock of the Dragon or at the Milk Boilers. Reach the ghost town of Roghudi frequented by pilgrims and cattle; in the end, do not forget to taste the typical products in one of the agritourisms in Bova.
Great importance has the ancient part of the city, the so called Locri Ephizephiri, rich in history and archaeological evidences.
What to visit: Temples, Walls and the Antiquarium Museum.
In the city of Locri, what to visit: : the Church of St. Catherine; the Cathedral of Virgin Mary of Mastro; the Town Hall; the Monument at the five Martyrs of Gerace; the Nosside Monument.
Roman Villa of Casignana
After long years of restoration, finally the Villa, with its beautiful mosaics and thermal baths, reopened its doors to the public.
Gerace is considered one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. Its history is linked to the one of Locri Epizefiri.
What to visit: Borgo Maggiore, revealed in the tuff; the Grimaldi-Serra Palace; the Migliaccio Palace; the Arcano Palace; the Castle, built in the VII century BC, of which today the tower and some walls remain; the Cathedral, divided into two parts: Crypt and Church; the Church of St. Francesco; the Church of St. Giovannello, considered as the most ancient Orthodox Church of Italy.
